Cape Town Pride is a non-profit, section 21 company that coordinates an annual festival of queer events in the Mother City. The 2010 Pride Festival will run over the period 26 February till 7 March. With Cape Town being seen as the gay epicenter of Africa, the 2010 event is already attracting international media attention.
The board of Cape Town Pride is pleased to announce three significant developments, and one public request:
- Office space donated to Cape Town Pride: The Cape Quarter, in De Waterkant, has generously donated the use of office space located at 4A, The Piazza, Dixon Street to Cape Town Pride until the end of March 2010. “This allows Pride a very prominent physical presence in the heart of what has traditionally been referred to as Cape Town’s ‘gay village’ precinct’” says spokesperson for Cape Town Pride, Russell Southey . He also commented that the venue would serve as a base for all Pride-related meetings held to organise and coordinate the 2010 festival. “This very generous donation gives us prominent street frontage, which will allow us to promote the festival brand to both locals and to tourists, and will serve as the hub of all our activities”. Chairperson of Cape Town Pride, Glenn de Swardt, added that he is hopeful the gay community will also own and support the space: “Cape Town Pride is a community festival and is entirely organised and managed by volunteers. Having this venue in the heart of the gay village will allow more people to become involved in coordinating and preparing for the Pride 2010.”
- Launch of Cape Town Pride to business community: The board of Pride will host an event commencing at 18h00 (6:00 pm) on Thursday 10 December, at MANSION, 15 Jarvis Street, in the gay village (opposite the new Cape Quarter centre). The event offers the gay and lesbian business sector of Cape Town an opportunity to meet the Pride team and to be briefed on developments regarding the 2010 festival.
- Official Cape Town Pride launch event: The Mother City’s queer community is invited to attend the official kick-off of Pride 2010. The fabulous launch event will take place at the Adam & Eve Lounge Bar, in Napier Street, on Sunday 13 December 2009 commencing at 5:30 pm, till late. The titillating launch party will feature various art-forms (from fashion to food to fine furnishings and all that’s fabulous), reflecting the theme for the 2010 Cape Town Pride Festival: Uniting cultures of Cape Town.
- Appeal for community support: Cape Town Pride is requesting donations of furniture and other items for their new premises, generously donated by the Cape Quarter. Said Pride chairperson Glenn de Swardt: “For the first time in our history Pride has our very own office, which will be used as a “queer headquarters” (LGBTIQ-HQ) in the build-up to the 2010 festival. Now we’re asking the lesbian and gay community of Cape Town to help us furnish it with chairs, couches, desks, tables, a fridge and lamps. This is a community space; it belongs to all of us, so let’s make it as functional and comfortable as we can.” Anyone wanting to donate any item, or to loan Pride any furniture, can call de Swardt on 021 425 6463.
