The Board of Cape Town Pride announces several significant changes that will ensure that the 2010 Cape Town Pride Festival will be a sensational and exciting event. With the international queer media focused on South Africa, and on Cape Town in particular due to the World Cup, the Mother City will host a rich, varied and dynamic festival that will showcase the diversity and richness of our queer community.
The Board itself has been restructured to accommodate additional skills and to ensure that the 2010 festival is the best ever. Additional board members were hand-picked for their vision, passion and organising abilities and already the board has taken several significant steps. Says chairperson Glenn de Swardt: “We are delighted that several non-profit organisations have joined us, ensuring our inclusiveness of various lesbian, gay and transgender groupings. In addition, we have appointed the very dynamic and well-known Odidi Mfenyana as our Festival Director for the 2010 event”.
The Pride Festival theme for 2010, “Uniting the Cultures of Cape Town”, reflects the inclusive and encompassing ethos of the event. Odidi has already established a creative and enthused Organising Committee, which has been meeting regularly to assist Odidi in planning and coordinating the festival’s diverse programme. Says Odidi: “We will be creating awareness of LGBTI issues and support and concern for all LGBTI communities fighting for equality worldwide, especially in the context of Africa.”
The festival will commence on Friday, 26 February and continue until Sunday 7 March.
The biggest draw card of the annual festival is the Cape Town Pride Parade and Carnival, which will take place on Saturday 6 March. Other events include:
- The Miss & Mr Cape Town Pride Pageant
- The Pink Ball which will include a tribute to LGBTI individuals who have excelled in serving our community or the city in general
- The Out In Africa Pride Film Festival
- The official opening event, The RED Party
- The Pride Divas, a performance by the city’s finest drag artists
- Cape Town Pride Sports Day
- A series of topical seminars
The Board and Organising Committee extend a warm invitation to members of the public become involved in creating the best ever Cape Town Pride Festival!
